Postpartum & Newborn Care

The Midwives at MCA understand that the days and weeks after your birth can be the most challenging time of all. We ask that you check in with us on a daily basis during the first few days. A home visit is done during the first two to three days on all home birth clients, as well as daily visits at the hospital for our hospital birth clients. We also perform a postpartum phone call or home visit on all clients at two weeks.

Postpartum home visits cover completion of the baby’s birth certificate and Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) testing, pulse-oximetry screening for Critical Congenital Heart Defects, physical exams of mother and newborn, breastfeeding support and weight check as needed. We expect you to have the NJ state-required Newborn Hearing Screening performed on the baby within the first thirty days of life.

A six-week postpartum office visit is scheduled to assist you with family planning and to make sure that everything is back to normal. This schedule is flexible and can be adjusted according to your family’s needs.

During the first six weeks and beyond, we continue to be available 24/7 for medical follow-up and individual support.
